Steve Dugan

August is a special month since the Condors competed in the World Ultimate Championships in Hawaii. So only one player is highlighted.

This month is dedicated to one of the players who helped keep the Condors together in the difficult years of the early-to-mid '90s. Without Steve, the Condors may not be here today!

Favorite Type of Play:
I like so many kinds. Here are my favorites: Laying out past your man for a block, Hucking long throws that are caught in stride, Catching long throws in stride. Beyond this, my favorite play involves being so in sync with my teammates that movement of team and the disc is effortless.

Reason for playing ultimate:
They sure have evolved. At first I just loved catching bombs from my uncle. While playing for the Tide, I played to try to win a championship. Now I play because I enjoy the game, trying to improve, the hard work towards a goal, the togetherness of the team, travelling to various places, meeting people, and the bonds I feel with my teammates. I like finding solutions to the challenges that being a teammate, being a leader, and being an opponent present. I love being a receiver, a quarterback and a cornerback.

When and where started playing ultimate:
UCSB, Fall 1988, intramurals with Uncle Doug.

Lessons learned playing ultimate:
That everyone on the team is valuable and essential for the success of the team. I have learned to be more understanding of different views and approaches. I have learned that positive reinforcement will always take someone farther than the negative. I have learned how important family and friends are. I found out that the journey is much more important than the end result. As I continue to play Ultimate, I continue to learn.

Personal comment:
Ultimate has been good to me. I have been lucky to play with and meet many quality people, to travel to beautiful places, and to fulfill my dream as a kid to be a professional athlete. Well, 2 out of 3 isn't bad. It's also pretty sweet to share common experiences with my uncle and to know that someone in my family, besides my teammates, actually gets this whole thing.

Noteworthy:
Steve is the longest playing member on the team today.
