Santa Barbara Tournament: Jan. 23-24
SATURDAY
13-0 vs Sacramento State
13-1 vs Stanford B
13-0 vs Berkeley (Berkeley lost to UCSD 13-9)
FEATURE GAME: 13-10 over UCSC Slugs (packed sidelines under the lights at Rob Field!) We started slow, down 2-0; we didn't take the lead until 7-6, then mirrored half at half time. Big time offensive plays. Glimme had a huge layout D on a huck in the end zone. But that was about it as far as big defensive plays. What won it for us was our smooth offense, and of course, Black Tide determination. Yarbrough definitely adds a big element to their team. It was fun watching him and Wood go head to head.
SUNDAY
13-5 vs Las Positas (we were down 4-3 before going on a 10-1
run to win).
12-5 vs SLO core (seeing the Glimmes go head to head was funny).
THEN CAME THE RAIN!
Would have met Stanford in the final, but it was called due to rain. Stanford was down 11-7 to UCSD. They won 13-12. Pooling was kindof screwy: Stanford had to beat UCSC (13-11) just to play San Diego in the semis. Really wanted to play Stanford, but it looks like we're going to have to wait until March now :(
Tempe (club) New Year Ultimate Fest: Feb. 6-7
Black Tide: 3-3
vs Anarchy 13-5
vs Dolomite 13-14
vs Carleton All-Stars 6-13
vs Nice Guys 13-8
vs Hwy 85 15-13 B-bracket Quarters
vs Los Guapos 10-13 B-bracket Semi's
The Tide did well at 3-3. They spanked Nice Guys, lost by
one amid much
controversy to Dolemite (Saucy Jackish/Jam types), but dropped
their
b-bracket to a 10-man Los Guapos squad (ouch!). All in all a good
weekend
for Santa Barbara ultimate. What the disheartened young tide guys
probably
don't realize yet is that playing (and sometimes losing) to the
better
teams at this tournament helps them immensely more than spanking
Sac State
13-0 at a college tourney. Better to take your lumps now and learn,
than
to postpone that lesson til Nationals. Congrats everyone.

Presidents' Day Tournament: Feb. 13-14
This weekend was definitely a great experience. It's not too often that a team gets the opportunity to compete in a three day thirty team tourney.
Saturday was kindof a cake walk. We played four games. The closest of which was against the Pomona Braineaters. I think the final score was 11-7. We could have played a lot better, but they aren't half bad. In fact it's kindof nice to see another team in our section improving.
INSERT: We took a roster of 16, but Oren Skoog was sick for the end of Saturday and all of Sunday, and Tommy (buzz) Hellyer hurt his shoulder early on Monday, so it was more like 15. gh
On Sunday the pools were reconstructed and reseeded. We drew Davis,
Yale, Humboldt and UC Santa Cruz. Yale went down pretty easy.
Everyone was quick to jump on the Ivy League because not a single
one of their teams made quarter-finals (three bids to Nationals?!!).
Brandon was quick to point out that it's still frozen back East.
Harvard (sponsored and fully funded by Mercedes Benz) lost to
SLO Core in an awesome early morning match on Monday. It never
ceases to amaze me how many of these teams are either paid for
by their schools or from sponsors.
Davis was a bunch of #%&%#@. Santa Cruz was a little iffy. Went up 3-1 with the disc on the goal line ready to go up one more when we turned it over and they rattled off a 7-2 run. We were kindof dumbstruck. No team has any business hucking on us like that. It was kindof frustrating, in fact it was very frustrating. But we rallied. Up 12-11. They've got the disc. I can still picture Glimme getting parallel to the ground and at his man's sternum with his arms fully outstretched to get the D. I had the best view of it too because I was guarding the dump. We work it around and punch it in for a gritty victory. Then came Humboldt. I don't know what the score was but I remember being impressed with the level of emotion and intensity they played with. One guy puked on the sidelines and then came back in to play.

zone at work
We got to sleep in on Monday because we won our pool. Drew Davis again in the first game - quarterfinals. Things got rowdy right away when their opening cheer cried "Fuck, Fuck, Fuck the Black Tide!" Hollywood cried "good morning" to the troops and we went to battle. Trash talk was abundant. I've learned to cool down a bit, but I couldn't help but laugh and get fired up at the same time when James Studarus raced the entire Davis team back to their own line after we scored our third point in a row on them. 8-0 halftime. I don't remember the final score.
James Studarus vs U.C. Davis ..................... Ben Smith vs
U.C. Santa Cruz
Onto semifinals. Colorado MamaBirds. We came out smooth. Solid. Icy. Brandon made some big plays right away. A D and a score. Before we knew it we had built a sound lead. 8-4 half. We score the opening point after half. 9-4. Then the shit hit the fan. They threw a poacher D on us that we had trouble dealing with. They played aggressive and weren't afraid to foul. Fan support was definitely in their favor even on the obvious calls. Next thing we new it was tied at 12, and we were in the middle of a big scoring drought. Rookie Jomo came through with a HUGE rip to Tommy that gave us back the momentum. We won by two. We made stupid plays on O and on D. Getting beat deep repeatedly... again.
Onto the finals vs. who else - Stanford. We came out strong and fast. Their big players made some big plays, but they failed to put together any kind of a formidable run. They seemed tired or something. Once again, we failed to play to our full potential, but it was a very enjoyable game. A solid, flowy performance. We won 15-11.
All in all it was a good tournament. San Diego ran this thing to its full potential. 12 games in one weekend, definitely a workout.
The folks in my house got pretty beat up. Ernie dislocated a finger on Sunday. The thing looked like a pipe cleaner after a kindergartner had played with it, but the San Diego trainer set it in place and he came back to play solidly on Monday. Buzz dislocated his shoulder laying out against Davis on Monday morning. He'll be out for a while. I guess I'm the lucky one, I only sprained my foot. Tommy and I are taking turns filling the ice tray in the freezer. (I'm icing as I write this). The school trainer says I should be ready to go for practice this weekend.

Stanford Invite Tournament: March 6-7
SATURDAY
Saturday was a cakewalk. UCSB went 4-0.
vs Notre Dame 13-3
vs LPC 13-6
vs Oregon 13-5
vs UCSC-B 13-2
SUNDAY
Due to no undefeated team in Stanford's pool on Saturday, Stanford was seeded low going into Sunday and had to play the Black Tide in the quarterfinals. I think it's the first time these two teams ever met in quarterfinals - usually it's in the finals of a tournament. The score went to 2-2 and then the Tide ran up a few in a row and took the half at 7-5. In the second half, Stanford came back and tied it at 10-10. Stanford scored and went up 10-11. The Tide came back 11-11. Then 11-12, then 12-12 with a hard cap at 13. Stanford scored and won 12-13. This was the Tide's first loss this year. Revenge is called the April Fools tournament April 3-4 in Santa Cruz.
vs Stanford 12-13 quarterfinals
Note: Stanford played Brown in the semifinals and lost 15-6. It was a blow out. Looks like Brown will be a contender this year. I didn't stay for the finals with Brown vs Colorado.

Sectionals: April 10-11 in Claremont, CA
On 4-10-99:
U.C. Santa Barbara 13 vs USC 0
U.C. Santa Barbara 13 vs SDSU 1
U.C. Santa Barbara 13 vs Pt. Loma 1
U.C. Santa Barbara 13 vs Oxy 2
On 4-11-99:
U.C. Santa Barbara 15 vs Pomona 4
U.C. Santa Barbara 15 vs UCSD 6
Started with USC. They had Kramer (aaron gross) and only 6 others. Good guys, but not great players. We gave them a bagel. Then we had Point Loma. This is their first season. We were murdering them with our zone. Then one point they connected on 3 hammers (one that was so far off the mark the wrong person caught it) and tried to huck it through James and it bounced off his hand (which was saving his forehead from a certain blast) and right to one of their guys. That was their only point.
After our bye we played San Diego State. They too had one good/lucky point and got one on us. Ended the day with Oxy. They had only allowed 9 goals in their 3 games; we beat them 13-2.
Overall on Saturday we outscored our opponents 52-4. The good part was that we didn't play down to the level of our opponents. We maintained a good crisp offense, and kept the intensity up on defense. I think we probably had less than 6 points with more than one turnover and most were played with 0 turnovers. Subbing was very open and the rookies played well.
For winning our pool we got put in a round robin with the other pool winners (UCSD and Claremont (who upset SLO)). Squids beat Claremont 15-9. We beat Claremont 15-4. These guys are great. They really have a lot of fun playing the game and have gotten much better over their time. I recognize many of the guys from my second year, and it is sort of neat to see how much better they have become. Again we played our game and minimized the turns.
Then the rain started and we had to play UCSD. They were without their captain (jaime town), but other than that they had a full squad. We persevered and held a good lead throughout. Many of our hucks were connecting and Tommy pulled down everything. We finished them off 15-6.
We had some pretty good defense. Brandon got a block on Bozo at the dump position. Ernie had a few amazing dumps. Nick was getting crazy. Ben Smith was laying out. I think I only marked in man-to-man 3 or 4 times in the whole game. It was fun.

Regionals: April 24-25 in Santa Barbara
On 4-24-99:
U.C. Santa Barbara vs Univ. of Arizona 13-1
U.C. Santa Barbara vs Air Force Academy 13-1
U.C. Santa Barbara vs UCLA 13-4
U.C. Santa Barbara vs Colorado College 15-4 'quarterfinals'
On 4-25-99:
U.C. Santa Barbara vs North Arizona Univ. 15-6 'semifinals'
U.C. Santa Barbara vs Colorado 15-10 'finals'
Saturday was a blow out. None of the teams in the Black Tide's pool, nor their quarterfinals opponent, could keep up with UCSB. The Black Tide won all 4 of their games easily. Sunday started out the same way in the semifinals. The Black Tide controlled the entire game against NAU. The finals against Colorado was the only game that stayed close. During the first half the Tide were even behind by one point on a few occasions; however, they rallied and were ahead at the half by 8-6. In the second half, the Tide scored 7 points to only 4 for Colorado; and the Tide won 15-10.
So it's on to the National Championships in Boulder, CO over Memorial Day Weekend. Quite a few parents already have their tickets, as do I. Hope to see you there.
